Sussex Portrait Artist of the Year Competition - 2025

The Sussex PAOTY Competition is a non profit event aimed at championing portrait artists, venues, businesses & communities in the Sussex area.

The 2025 Competition

The Sussex PAOTY competition was held on 22nd March 2025 and brought together a dynamic group of artists—Tim O’Brien, Adrian Sensicle, Mandy Worster, Jake Fern, Tracey Cranidge, Jodie Drew, Maria Huxstep, Tim Bidwell, and Helen Stone—who each faced the challenge of capturing the essence of three well-known sitters: musician Dunstan Bruce, comedian Rich Wilson, and actor Richard Campbell. With just four hours to create their pieces, the artists worked under the watchful eyes of a captivated audience of 200 spectators.

After careful deliberation, an esteemed judging panel crowned Jake Fern as the winner for his powerful portrait of Dunstan Bruce, former lead singer of anarcho-punk band Chumbawamba. Tim Bidwell secured second place with his compelling depiction of Rich Wilson, while Jodie Drew took third with her striking portrait of Richard Campbell.

The competition was judged by three accomplished figures in the art world: Wendy Barratt, Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year winner; Amy Dury, a former Sky Portrait Artist of the Year participant; and Eden Maseyk, co-founder of Helm Gallery. Their expertise and keen eye for artistic excellence ensured a fair and insightful selection process.

This event was made possible thanks to the generous support of our sponsors: Seawhite of Brighton, Blue Spire Chartered Accountants, The Venue, ArkPakk, Ophelia Art Consultancy, AOT Fine Art Framing, and Oxmarket Contemporary.

Now, art lovers have the unique opportunity to view these outstanding portraits up close at the Oxmarket Gallery. The exhibition will run from 1st April – 13th April offering visitors the chance to experience firsthand the skill, creativity, and passion that defined this year's competition.

Saturday 22nd March 2025 at The Venue, Worthing

The 2025 Artists

Jake Fern’s artistic journey is rooted in self-discovery and shaped by unorthodox experiences—from Himalayan tents to refugee camps. His work reflects a belief in truth over dogma and the human spirit’s capacity for beauty when nurtured. Inspired by Keats’ “Beauty is truth, truth beauty,” Jake creates art that invites viewers to reconnect with wonder, truth, and the possibility of a more harmonious world.

    The 2025 Judges

Winner of Sky Portrait Artist of the Year 2023 (Series 10), Wendy’s winning commission of Dame Jane Goodall now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.

Her work has been exhibited twice in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ annual show and featured in the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award. In 2024, she was elected a member of the Contemporary British Portrait Painters.

      The 2025 Celebrity Sitters

Richie is a critically acclaimed British actor, best known for his role as DS Glenn Branson in the hit TV series Grace.

Beyond Grace, Richie has had a diverse and impressive career, starring in Top Boy, The Essex Serpent, Small Axe, and Anuvahood, showcasing his versatility across TV and film.

With powerful performances ranging from gripping drama to sharp comedy, he has firmly established himself as one of the UK’s most exciting and dynamic actors.
